Shanghai, China's largest auto export hub, shipped 1.851 million vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 45.2 percent year on year. As the city endures extreme summer heat, ground temperatures at Nangang Terminal have topped 50 degrees Celsius, with enclosed spaces reaching as high as 70 degrees. At the country's busiest auto export port, frontline workers are facing that heat head-on. Nangang Terminal alone shipped a record 411,300 vehicles in the first half, up 74.7 percent year on year, with terminal drivers playing a key role in moving vehicles from the storage yard onto the ships. 

At the 2 p.m. peak, drivers suited up in full protective gear keep up a rapid pace of vehicle transfers — checking, boarding, starting and driving at a steady, practiced rhythm. Once loaded, every vehicle must be firmly secured with straps, buffers and locking systems to withstand the rolling and pitching of the open sea, work that falls to the lashing crew. During peak hours, more than 300 drivers work the terminal, each averaging over 70 round trips a day, with rest stations set up along the work routes and stocked around the clock with heat-relief supplies. The heat hasn't slowed Shanghai's export momentum: the city's "new three" products — electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells — saw export value surge to 56.52 billion yuan in the same period, up more than 120 percent year on year.
