Shanghai Index Aims to Boost Sustainable Urban Development 2022-11-01

Under the theme of ‘Act Local to Go Global,’ the World Cities Day host event opened in Shanghai today, and at this year's gathering the results of the Shanghai Application Index will be released for the first time, illustrating the sustainable development of cities.
At the opening ceremony for last year’s World Cities Day, Shanghai unveiled the framework of the Shanghai Index. The index is an internationally recognized indicator jointly developed by experts from China and abroad with the support of UN-Habitat, China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and the Shanghai government. It aims to offer scientific analysis and trend research on sustainable urban development.
The index takes into account different fields such as the economy, society and the environment, and is adaptable to different factors including population and economic development levels.
It can help cities identify or adjust development priorities by assessing and reflecting on achievements and challenges in sustainable urbanization, thereby promoting implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, The Paper reported Dr. Chen Haiyun, chief expert with the Shanghai Index research team and a researcher at Tongji University, as saying.
He also said the Shanghai Index focuses on whether a city's development is coordinating all its different aspects, and whether the social wellbeing of residents is being substantially improved.
The index has been launched in five pilot ares in Shanghai: Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian and Nanhui.
The 2010 Shanghai World Expo demonstrated the ‘Better City, Better Life’ concept, and at the closing ceremony, the organizing committee, the United Nations and the International Exhibition Bureau jointly proposed designating Oct. 31 as World Cities Day.
