Shanghai's Fudan University sets up brain-computer interface center 2024-06-17

Shanghai's Fudan University established a research center focusing on nerve stimulation and brain-computer interfaces to drive a future of computers that help people manage pain, depression, and compulsive behavior.
The center is co-built by seven Fudan-backed research institutions, including the Institute of Science and Technology of Brain-Inspired Intelligence, the School of Data Science, the State Key Laboratory of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits and Systems, and Huashan Hospital, the ISTBI announced recently.
The fresh institution will do basic research such as encoding and decoding neural information, regulating neural circuits, modeling brain-computer interaction. It will also promote the application of research results in clinical medicine.
Wang Yizheng, the director of a research center for geriatric diseases at Huashan Hospital, will be the chief scientist of the new center, and Wang Shouyan, vice president of the ISTBI, is the director. Ten experts, including neurobiologist Poo Muming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have formed a related scientific and technical committee.
Fudan University has more than 10 years of experience in researching BCI-related materials, electrodes, chips, and clinical applications, Wang Shouyan said to Yicai. The new center aims to strengthen cooperation between basic research, clinical application, and engineering technologies, and give full play to the university’s advantages in medical science and engineering, the VP added.
BCIs are becoming a reality in clinical use. Ruijin Hospital, which is affiliated with the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, set up the nation's first BCI and neuromodulation center in 2020 to carry out clinical research on neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Parkinson’s disease.
