Daily int’l passenger traffic at Shanghai's Pudong Airport hits over 100,000   2024-06-19

International passenger throughput at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai recently hit a near four-year record high of more than 100,000 in a day, mainly thanks to China's visa waiver agreements.

Some 103,213 passengers passed through the customs port of Pudong Airport for international travel on June 16, a source from the airport border checkpoint told Yicai on Monday. The number of such travelers has exceeded 13 million this year as of the same day, four months quicker than a year earlier, the person added.

The number of Chinese mainland residents on international trips totaled 8.91 million, while those from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan were 940,000, the source noted. There were more than 3.15 million foreign passengers, doubling from a year ago, with most being United States, Japanese, and South Korean citizens.

"Visa-free policies make travel easier and more convenient," German traveler Haidl Anton Lutz said after arriving in China yesterday. Not having to apply for a visa is very friendly for foreigners who want to visit the country temporarily for business or tourism, he pointed out.

With China adjusting visa-free policies, the number of foreigners entering the country in this way has surged about 10 times to 446,000 this year compared to a year earlier. Over 70 percent of such travelers came for tourism or business, showing that foreigners' enthusiasm to visit China has been significantly boosted.

In addition, as the number of countries offering visa-free entry to China expands, more than 4.54 million residents from the Chinese mainland have departed via the customs port of Pudong Airport since the beginning of this year, mainly to neighboring countries and regions. More than 3.29 million of these travelers went to spots in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Macau, as well as Japan and South Korea.
