Shanghai's two airports expect 16% boost in summer traffic   2024-07-04

Shanghai's two airports expect to increase their daily passenger traffic during the ongoing summer holiday season.

From July 1 to Aug. 31, the daily passenger flow should rise 16 percent to 360,000 people from a year ago, China News Service reported this Thursday.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport are likely to have 22.2 million passengers in total during the vacation period, and the former is expected to make up over 60 percent of the total, Shanghai Airport Group disclosed.

The aviation bases are forecast to host 140,000 flights in total during the 62-day period, averaging almost 2,270 take-offs and landings per day, up 8 percent from a year earlier. Almost 70 percent of the total during the two-month period will be in Pudong.

Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Sanya, and Urumqi are some of the popular domestic destinations this year. Among overseas destinations, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates are hot.

This summer, China Eastern Airlines intends to deploy nearly 800 passenger planes, including six homegrown C919s. The Shanghai-based airline plans to operate over 3,200 flights per day, up 13 percent from the same period in 2019, a time before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the parent. Flights to foreign destinations will exceed the number of the same period in 2019.
