Yangtze River Delta’s super-loop railway logs 90% passenger loads in first month   2024-07-16

China’s first interregional Super Loop High-speed Railway, which connects the most densely populated and economically developed areas in the Yangtze River Delta region, has had an average passenger load factor of almost 90 percent in its first full month of operations.

The Super Loop Line, which runs a 1,200 kilometer route to and from Shanghai, has carried 110,000 passengers since it started operations on June 15, according to the China Railway Shanghai Bureau.

Since the summer travel season began on July 1, it has transported an average of 4,000 passengers a day, the bureau said. And the number of passengers headed to five major scenic spots is now more than 830 per day, an almost 20 percent increase from when the route first started.

The Super Loop Line serves an important role in promoting people-to-people exchanges and economic integration and development in the region, said Yang Yansheng, director of China Railway Shanghai Design Institute and the Yangtze River Delta Railway and Rail Transit Research Base. It connects the big cities with areas with popular tourist destinations, such as the western part of Zhejiang province and the southern part of Anhui province.

The route, which takes eight hours from start to finish, has 19 stops and connects many small cities with big metropolises such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei and Hangzhou as well as well-known scenic spots such as Huangshan, Jiuhua Mountain and Qiandao Lake.

The Yangtze River Delta, which covers an area of 210,000 square kilometers, is the region with the most developed and complete high-speed railway network in the country. It had 26 high-speed railways as of the end of May running along a railroad network of more than 7,200 km.
