First VR experience involving immersive sound offers a unique look at Shanghai Concert Hall 2025-07-17

The first VR experience involving immersive sound will be available at Cadillac Shanghai Concert Hall from July 18 to Aug 31. The VR project Back to Shanghai 1930 is jointly produced by Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Theatre Academy, and Vivo.
Shanghai Concert Hall is celebrating its 95th birthday this year and the VR experience invites visitors to experience the past and present of the vintage architecture, following a virtual character named Alex.

Visitors to the VR project Back to Shanghai 1930 will come across theatrical settings of the Nanking Theatre in the 1930s.
This is the first project in the world that integrates VR and immersive sound. Acoustic engineers created a 360 degree three-dimensional sound field with real spatial perception, achieved through a combination of 14 channels of horizontal surround sound and eight channels of overhead sound.
Zhao Cong, a renowned performer of the Chinese pluck-string instrument Pipa, composed the theme music for the project.

Aside from hosting formal concerts, Shanghai Concert Hall has tried different ways to engage with the public and make its architecture and heritage accessible to all. The VR experience is the latest effort for this purpose, according to Fang Jing.
"We want to open up more spaces to the public, and hope to invite visitors to the hall and spend a whole day here, even when there is no concert," she said.
The VR exhibition is taking place at the Music Infinity Space on the fourth floor in the concert hall.
"Later, we will host more colorful events, such as exhibitions, mini-theater shows, and so on, in this space."
