Shanghai Tourism Festival launches 'classic events season' 2025-09-07
The Shanghai Tourism Festival runs through October 6.
The "classic events season" of the Shanghai Tourism Festival, in its 36th edition, has kicked off with a float parade, cultural showcases and about 200 programs.
The festival, running from July 5 to October 6, adopts a "one festival, two seasons" format that combines a summer tourism season with an extended autumn program. The summer edition has boosted tourism spending in July and August to 152.4 billion yuan (US$21 billion), a 27 percent increase from a year earlier.
"The festival is designed as a celebration for all, and a platform that integrates culture, tourism, commerce, sports and exhibitions," Zhong Xiaomin, director of the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism, told at press conference on Friday.
From September 13 to 19, more than 60 attractions, including the iconic Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai Wild Animal Park, will offer half-price admission.
The festival's signature parade will return on September 13 along Zhongshan Road E1 in downtown Huangpu District, featuring 25 floats and 24 performance troupes from 15 countries and regions.
The floats will later tour 10 districts across the city, while international performers will present shows at sites such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Daning area.
The closing ceremony on October 6 will stage a nighttime cultural showcase at Expo Culture Park in the Pudong New Area, with floats circling the lake.
Other highlights include the Jing'an International Sculpture Exhibition, the Nanxiang Guochao (China-chic) Festival, the Shanghai International Tea Culture and Tourism Festival, the Jiangnan Food Carnival, the Shanghai German Beer Festival, the "Shanghai Root" Culture and Tourism Festival, the Baoshan Changtan Art Festival and the Fengjing Water Town Wedding, according to the administration.
An urban forest carnival, a garden lifestyle festival, and a kite flying festival are also scheduled.
Organizers said the festival will also link with the Shanghai International Light Festival and the Shanghai International Arts Festival. Five sub-venues in Ningbo (Zhejiang Province), Yancheng (Jiangsu Province), Mianyang (Sichuan Province), Kashgar (Xinjiang) and Shigatse (Xizang) will extend the festival's reach beyond Shanghai.
