Shanghai's historical shikumen neighborhoods are transformed into the iconic Xintiandi community.
The commericial identity of "Xintiandi" will be elevated to a comprehensive community brand, to unlock new possibilities for urban living, Shui On Land recently announced.
Since the early 2000s, Shui On has pioneered urban regeneration models that transformed some of Shanghai's historical shikumen (stone-gated) neighborhoods into the iconic Xintiandi community. This approach has also been refined across multiple cities such as Wuhan, Chongqing and Foshan.
Stephanie Lo, vice chairman of Shui On Land, remarked that thriving cities are made of vibrant communities, not buildings.
"We are integrating retail, residences, offices, culture and public space to create inclusive, sustainable solutions for the cities of the future," Lo said.
Many interactive programs are held at Xintiandi, linking traditional culture with modern experiences.
With the motto "Bring Places to Life," Xintiandi will feature eye-catching programs like the "Heritage NOW Festival," linking traditional culture with modern experiences, and the "Art to Gather" initiative, showcasing diverse artistic expressions in shared spaces.
On September 13, the Creative X Conference was launched to explore new connections between commerce and community life for future cities.
At the end of September, Xintiandi Dongtai Li will also begin trial operations. This innovative space in Shanghai will redefine urban living with 88,000 square meters of open-air shops, offering a rich mix of dining, art and lifestyle experiences. By celebrating local culture, Dongtai Li aims to revive the city's vibrancy and become a lively urban hub.
